SGYC needs you!

We’re thrilled to announce we are launching a brand new venture for young performers!

In September we are launching SGYC: Stafford Gatehouse Youth Choir.

This exciting, modern choir will be lead by the hugely talented Musical Director Simon Allen. The sessions will take place on Wednesday evenings from 6pm – 8pm (other evenings and weekends may be asked for) for a term up until December.

Simon Allen is hugely excited by this new project, commenting:“Gone will be stuffy idea of old fashioned choirs and in with an exciting brand of choir singing; the key is have a blast and learn whilst creating an awesome sound! I have been chomping at the bit to bring this type of choir to Stafford and have an arsenal of fantastic songs, some of which will be unique arrangements that we will learn, perform and blow people away with!”

Simon Allen with The Choir's Gareth Malone

“The plan is to get everyone in the choir buzzing about singing out loud and creating a sound that will be a force to be beckoned with. It is my experience that singing in a choir can bring out the most shy of people, who ultimately learn to love performing music. We will be performing music from the charts, TV shows and whatever else inspires us! Bring on SGYC!” concluded Allen.

If you are aged between 16 and 21 and have a passion for performing and music then we want to hear from you! All you have to do for now to register your interest is simply email ehogan@staffordbc.gov.uk with the following information:

Much Ado About Dating

We think it's a fair wager that at one stage or another, we've all sought dating advice. Be it from friends, family or your sister's copy of Cosmo, we've all reached out because we just didn't know how to 'break the ice' – a term coined by Shakespeare in The Taming of the Shrew, by the way - with the lady/man/both at the bookshop.

However, We're going to put it to you that the world has been looking in all the wrong places for advice. Or more rather, we've been reading the wrong kinds of literature. There's only one man's timeless poetry you need to heed. No not Kanye West, We're talking about William Shakespeare.

Here's an outline of five dating and life lessons we can learn from one of Shakespeare's most famous comedies, Much Ado About Nothing.

1. Slaying 'the green-eyed monster'
A phrase originally coined by Shakespeare in Othello, letting the beast that is jealousy dictate your relationship and your life is rarely healthy. In Much Ado About Nothing, Don John is jealous of his brother and friends and seeks to makes their lives miserable. His plots are discovered and he awaits punishment by the end of the play.

Jealousy also causes fallout between best friends Claudio and Don Pedro, when the former believes the latter is trying to win Hero's heart for his own. Although the rift is quickly mended, jealousy can kill a relationship. Trusting your partner, not playing games and lengthening the leash are all good relationship practice.

Romeo and Juliet 2012

2. Don't let pride get in your way
When Claudio wrongly believes his wife-to-be has been unfaithful, he decides against sitting her down to have a chat and instead opts for a good old fashioned public humiliating at the altar.

Claudio's pride gets in the way of the truth and distorts his perceptions of innocent Hero, which leads to her own dad wishing her dead. It would certainly seem that men are a prideful bunch, but anyone can see from the scenario outlined above that a good chat and having some trust would have resolved the issue earlier.

As You Like It 2014

3. Infidelity doesn't pay
Shakespeare often focuses on infidelity in his comedies, especially when it comes to the ladies. Claudio, Don Pedro and Hero's own father are all quick to believe that Hero has been pouring treasure into foreign laps, without even consulting her.

Knowing your partner well and trusting them seems like obvious advice, but rarely headed. If you suspect your partner of groping for trout in a peculiar river, maybe you should confront him or her before jumping to any conclusions?

A Midsummer Night's Dream 2013

4. Pretending to be someone you're not
Don Pedro pretends to be Claudio and Margaret pretends to be Hero in the play; needless to say, neither ends particularly well. Pretending to be something or someone you're not doesn’t last and you'll eventually have to come clean or be found out. Always be yourself, unless you can be Beyoncé. In which case, always be Beyoncé.

The Comedy of Errors 2011

 5. Don't listen to other people, especially your mates
Think about it; these are the same people that told you jumping out of that second floor window wouldn't hurt.

In Much Ado, Don Pedro engineers a scenario to get Benedick and Beatrice together, just so he and his men have a wedding to go to while they wait for Claudio and Hero's. It all ends happily ever after, but we the audience have to ask for how long?

As You Like It 2014

There is an obvious irony of a blog post offering advice on dating that then concludes with the message that you shouldn't listen to other people. But as any A-level English Literature student will happily regurgitate to you - Shakespeare was all about the irony.

And like the patronising final thought on Jerry Springer, we'll leave you with this. 'Love is blind' (Merchant of Venice) and you might have to bundle into a few people before you meet the right one, but only you will know which is the right for you, so bundle on.

Also, if you fancy taking that special someone out this summer and finding out even more Shakespearean relationship advice first hand, why not join us at Stafford Castle for the 25th anniversary of Stafford Festival Shakespeare between June 25 and July 11, 2015. You can find out more about the event here.

Stafford Festival Shakespeare to take local inspiration

We're incredibly excited to reveal that this year’s Stafford Festival Shakespeare production of Much Ado About Nothing will be set in Stafford, at the close of World War 1.

“The show will open in 1918 as Leonato welcomes the troops back home from the Great War for music, dancing and romance. As war gives way to peace and Edwardian propriety unbuttons into the Jazz Age, Shakespeare’s much loved comedy will weave its magic in the dusk” commented Director Peter Rowe.

Production Design will be by Dawn Allsopp, who is new to the Stafford Festival Shakespeare creative team. Dawn is a set and costume designer with impressive experience of over 23 years working in venues throughout the country.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Dawn to the Stafford Festival Shakespeare team this year” commented Producer Derrick Gask. “She is exceptionally talented and has some wonderful ideas for this year’s show. As it’s our big 25th anniversary I can’t think of a more appropriate setting than Stafford” concluded Gask.

Tickets for Much Ado About Nothing are on sale now and start from as little as £12. You can book your tickets by calling the box office on 01785 619080 or by clicking here.

The show will open at Stafford Castle on Thursday 25th June and run until Saturday 11th July 2015.

“CELL is as perfect a piece of theatre as one is likely to see”

Following a sold out premiere at the Little Angel Theatre’s Firsts Festival, critical acclaim at Greenwich Theatre and the New Diorama in 2014 and a Peter Brook Award nomination, Little Cauliflower and Smoking Apples bring their brand new collaboration, CELL, to The MET Studio on Friday 17th April.

After being diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease, Ted goes on the trip of a lifetime… and so does his pet fish! As the disease starts to cause his mobility to degenerate, Ted rushes to experience a world outside his comfort zone; from the markets of Lille to the romance of Venice.

Humorous, heart-warming and uplifting, CELL features charming puppetry, physical theatre and an original musical score to tell the story of one man’s final adventure to create enough memories to last a lifetime.

This new production is the outcome of a collaboration between Little Cauliflower and Smoking Apples, two of the most exciting young companies in the UK at the moment. Having lost their Grandfathers to the disease, the subject of MND is close to the hearts of those involved.

Ideal for lovers of theatre and puppetry, CELL is a unique, visually inventive show that shifts seamlessly between varying forms of puppetry, including beautifully crafted, hand-drawn shadow puppetry and object manipulation, to engage audiences with a complex medical condition in a positive way. The show does not focus on MND, rather the personal journey of one man, in an uplifting and humorous way.

"CELL is as perfect a piece of theatre as one is likely to see" ***** The New Current
